The NW U16 All Star game was played Sunday afternoon (June 26) in St Clements as part of the Peter Hallman Men’s Premier Fastpitch Tournament. The 20 all stars from our U16 division put on an excellent show for spectators, families and friends as they banged out 23 runs on 16 hits in an 18-5 slugfest. Other big sticks came from Tavi’s Jack Holdsworth (triple, single), Tavi’s Jaris Marriott (2 singles, triple, 1 rbi) and a James Miller (KW Twins) triple. Belmore’s Mac Mulvey stroked his own triple and an rbi; Baden’s Scott Carey, Mackenzie Campbell (Stratford) and Tony Tikel (Pushlinch) all had their single bat in a run. Seven different pitchers were on display; Mac Mulvey limited the NW hitters to 2 runs on one hit while striking out three in his two innings of work. KW’s James Miller allowed one run on 0 hits with 5 ks in his two innings. Darcy Mosburger also excelled from the pitching plate allowing only one run on one hit while adding 2 strike outs in his 1.1 innings of work. And we must mention Cambridge’s Jarred Steckley who came in to pitch in the final inning and quickly ended the game with two quick outs in the only two batters he faced. Despite the emphasis on offence, sparkling individual plays were also made on defence by KW’s Carter McDonald on a second base shallow right field running catch and Stratford’s Quin Lesouder”s roving catches in left field. The official ISC umpires congratulated the the players on their fine efforts, sportsmanship and positive team spirits. For the Home Squad Chad Brown (Tavistock) pitched a scoreless first two innings followed by Derek Erb (Elma), Nathan Brookshaw (Stratford), Thomas Baker (KW), and Dylan Hehn (Twin Centre).

Jordan Borth (Belmore) from the shortstop position made a sliding catch on a pop foul to the side fence behind third base to end the first. Dylan Hehn needed only 4 pitches to record the three Visitor outs in the top of the 6th. On offence Jordan Borth hit a grand slam home run to deep left in the 4th to go along with another 2 singles to lead the 12 hit Visitors’ attack. Also chipping in with a pair of singles for the Visitors were Jeremy Shumacher (KW), Mark Wilker (Innerkip), Jake Voisin (Twin Centre), and Justin Kleinsasser. Jordan Borth led the Visitors with 5 rbi’s while Justin Kleinsasser knocked in two. On the Home side of the ball Kayla Sonntag (Cambridge) was on base from every at bat as she earned 4 base on balls. NW Captures Gold at Eastern Canadians
The Ramseyer Earthworks Bantam Boys, Team Ontario 2, brought home the gold medal from St. Perpetue Quebec, host of this year's U-16 Eastern Canadian Softball Championships. The Athletics went a perfect 5-0 over the 4 days.
Tavistock opened the tournament on Thursday with a convincing 7-0 victory over Nova Scotia 1. Tristan Wilhelm and Jake Wiffen led the attack with 2 hits apiece while Derek Hyde, Justin Wagler, Dylan Brown, Jamieson Hergott and Jake Bauman all reached base safely. Wagler earned the victory striking out 8 in 5 innings of play. The Bantams started their second game against Quebec 2 later that day, but with 2 outs in the top of the first the rain took over postponing the game to Friday morning. The game remained scoreless until the third inning when Tavistock sent 13 batters to the plate taking a commanding 8-0 lead. The Athletics scored 2 more in the 4th, gave up 4 in the 5th but scored another 2 in the 7th to win 11-4. Wilhelm went 4 for 5 at the plate, Jackson Hergott and Jamieson Hergott each added 2 hits and single hits going to Wiffen, Jensen van Boekel, Jeremy Kropf, Bryce Yantzi, Trent Jones and Mike Johnson. Jake Wiffen allowed just 5 hits while striking out 10 on the mound. The last game of round robin play for Tavistock was against New Brunswick. The Athletic's bats made short work of this team scoring 6 in the first, 8 in the second and adding one in the 3rd to finish the preliminary round tops in pool B. Jeremy Kropf earned the win striking out 8 and giving up just one hit and a walk.
Team Ontario 1, from Grand Valley finished first in pool A and was the opponent in the undefeated game with the winner earning a berth in the gold medal game. This was the fifth time these two teams had faced each other this year, with each team winning twice. Wagler drew a walk in the first and scored on Hyde's RBI to open the game. Strong pitching and defence on both sides of the diamond was again the highlight of this game. Grand Valley finally pushed a run across the plate in the 6th inning to tie the game. Seven innings proved nothing so the International tie breaker rule came into effect with a runner starting at second base in the 8th inning. With Wagler standing at second, Wilhelm doubled him in then moved to third on a single by Wiffen. The next two batters were retired before Jamieson Hergott hit a single scoring two to put Tavistock up 4-1. This game was far from over as Grand Valley scored 2 before the Athletics recorded the third out stranding two Team Ontario 1 runners to win 4-3. Wagler struck out 9 during the 8 innings of play.
Team New Foundland & Labrador defeated ON 1 in the semi-final to face Tavistock in the final game of the tournament. As expected a very tight defensive game was in store. With two outs in the fourth inning Brown worked a walk, moved to second on a passed ball then scored on Jamieson Hergott's single. New Foundland's lead-off batter opened with a single in the sixth inning and eventually scored tying the game at 1. With the scored still tied, the home team Tavistock Athletics came to bat in the bottom of the seventh. Jeremy Kropf opened with a walk, moved to second on a passed ball before Mike Johnson singled leaving runners on first and third. The next batter was retired bringing Wilhelm to the plate. With two strikes, Wilhelm hit a single to left bringing home Kropf and the gold medal for Tavistock. Wagler pitched the final game of the tournament striking out 11 earning him the tournament MVP award.

NW Grads Selected to Team Canada !
Three former NW players have made it to the very top of Canadian Mens Softball as they have been selected to join the Team Canada team roster. Team Canada will next play at the Pan-AM games in Mexico slated for later next month (November). Brandon Horn, (Waterloo Minor Twins NW 1994 - 2003 ) a slick infielder and great stick at the top of the order is fresh off a Senior Men's National Championship with the KW Twins this past August in Owen Sound. Ben Wideman, (Elmira Laser Video NW 1996 - 2005) a speedy outfielder and top leadoff batter recently participated in the Men's Nationals with the Owen Sound Selects. Corey Way and Brendan Roach will receive funding and training through this program which helps prepare Ontario athletes for national and international competitions in their sport. Corey and Brendan were picked up by the Walkerton Wild and helped them to win the Midget Canadian National Championship this past summer. Both players completed their minor fastball careers in 2010. Both plan to continue playing locally with Kitchener Mens Fastball clubs this upcoming summer as well as now being members of the 15 player Ontario Quest for Gold 2011 effort. NWRMSL Year in Review - 2010
In 2010 the NW fielded 38 minor teams. Division championships were won by Kitchener-Waterloo (Midget), Elmira (Bantam), Tavistock (Peewee) and Wellesley (Squirt). North Waterloo teams also proved successful at the OASA and ORSA championships as well as the Eastern Canadians and the Ontario Summer games. And of course our Stratford Memorials earned Silver at the Midge Nationals.
Moving to 2011 we hope for another competitive summer of fastball in our region. It is hoped that the Perth and NW communities can continue to work together to provide these fastball opportunities. Efforts will be made to get the NW Mite division back into the fold. A review of yearend tournament sites and policy/formats need be undertaken. As well a study of league fees/tournament fees will be reviewed.
I trust our softball people will enjoy a prosperous and enjoyable offseason. I look forward to working with you again come the spring.
Yours in fastball,
Bruce
NWRMSL president
